What is it?
• Have your child read out loud for 20 minutes every night and record their reading on a reading log.
• Support your child by having discussions about their books as adults would. (Have them predict what might happen, talk about what they think about the characters or topic, make personal connections to the text.)
Why is this the most important homework your child will have this year?
• Children that read independent level books daily gain fluency and tend to really enjoy reading.
• Often students want to read a book more than once. Please encourage this. This will increase fluency and is a true indication they really like the book.
• Our goal is not only to build reading skills but to ultimately create a true and lifelong love of reading.
Remember:
• Your child will be choosing their own books to bring home.
• Picture books, chapter books, fiction, or nonfiction One is not better than the other!
• Please do not request harder books. This does not make children better readers. It only gives them the message reading should be difficult.
• Occasionally your child may choose to bring home a book that is beyond their reading level. This means they are excited about this book. Please read it to them.
Camp ReadaLot is a successful program and I look forward to helping your child grow as a reader this year. If you have any questions please get in touch!
Happy Reading!
