Dear Parents,
Every two weeks your child brings home a new word list that they will be working on in small groups, partners, and individually in class. The program is called Words Their Way. It spans from emergent word study skills on up through sophisticated word study ideas such as prefixes, suffixes, and root words. Your child's word list was determined by a developmental spelling assessment that we three times a year. We do not do “traditional” spelling tests, but throughout the week the students sort their words according to spelling patterns, quiz each other, as well as look for other words that fit their spelling patterns. They also have periodic “check ups” on how well they are mastering their words in small groups with me.
Speed Sort- Cut out the individual word cards and have your child sort them into spelling pattern groups. Time them and see if they can beat their time!
Play Dough Words- use play dough to form letters to spell out each word.
Pipe Cleaner Words- use pipe cleaners and bend and form to make letters used to write out the words.
Type It!- Type or draw their words on the computer/iPad/laptop.
Rainbow Words- spell words using different colored markers or crayons for each letter.
Trace- have fun and let kids trace their words on your back or palm. Have them focus on properly forming each letter so you can feel it being drawn.
Small/Medium/Large Words- How boring is it to write words 3 or 5 times each? How about jazzing it up by having them write the word using the smallest letters they can possibly write (this one is a favorite), then doing it normal sized and finally jumbo sized.
Print Words- Use newspaper or magazine print to cut out fun letters. Have child make words using clipped letters.
Partner Spell- take turns adding a letter to spell each word. For example, for the word FUN - child starts by saying the letter F, parents adds letter U and child then completes word by adding the letter N. This requires focus and listening and is a great exercise for elementary aged learners.
SpellingCity.com- Have your child enter their words and explore the free games and activities offered here.
*If your child has picture cards the focus is on recognizing the SOUNDS in the word, not spelling the whole word correctly. As long as they are getting their target sounds, brave spelling the rest of the word is okay!
Thank you for your support!
