For the month of December second graders will be sharing the winter holidays they celebrate as well as exploring the customs and traditions of five different winter holidays celebrated around the world; Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Three Kings' Day, and the Chinese New Year. We will be diving into fiction and nonfiction texts to examine how different stories and traditions from different cultures can convey similar messages and the spirit of the season. We will also be doing informational writing to share what we learn about each holiday. Our goal is to cultivate a community in which the students learn to appreciate cultural differences as well as recognize the common ideas of love, family, thankfulness, and giving that can be found around the world at this time of year.

Dear Parents,
The most important homework I ask my 2nd graders to do is to READ at home. I have begun sending a book home with each child for "Camp Read A-Lot"- our take-home reading system. Your child will bring a book home that they either read in a group lesson, or picked as a "Just-Right" book from his/her seat sack. In addition to Mrs. Grost's library, I encourage you to utilize the Highland Park public library, as well as Scholastic book orders. If you do not have books at home for your child to read, please let me know and I will send more home. It is crucial that you carve out time for your child to read. Encourage him to read to you while you're making dinner, have him read before bed, or have him listen to RAZ kids. Pick a book that YOU enjoy to read aloud to them- keep it fun! But make the time. They need to practice often- in school and at home. So as you prepare for our Thanksgiving break, plan a trip to the library if you're in town, or pack books if you are traveling! Happy Reading! Fall parent/teacher conferences are scheduled. I'm excited to meet with each of you to share the amazing progress your child had made so far this year! We have been hard at work in math! The students have had multiple opportunities to estimate and measure using different tools and units. In writing, we are wrapping up our Small Moment narrative unit. We have published at are going to be having a celebration to share our published stories.
