12/18/2014

1) Tomorrow, Friday the 19th is our Pajama Party! The class earned their 50th TEAM Lego! They may wear pajamas and bring a small stuffed animal.

2) Your child received an envelope yesterday explaining our Secret Santa gift exchange. We will exchange gifts tomorrow! If you have questions, please refer to the letter, or email me!

3) We have noticed that some items left in the hallway (stuffed animals and fun backpack keychains) have gone missing. Please consider keeping all special items INSIDE your back child's backpack.

4) I encourage everyone to "Be a Master Reader!" over winter break. I am sending home a hard copy of the document below on Friday.

Happy Reading and Happy Holidays!

A Message from Our Fine Arts Presenter, Wendy Bloom

Dear Parents,

On Friday, I visited Ms. Buti’s classroom as part of the PTO’s continuing Fine Arts Education program. I presented the artist Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997).  Roy Lichtenstein was a painter, a sculptor and a printmaker who is best known for creating a whole new style of art called “Pop Art.” He believed that art existed everywhere in the world, even in places you wouldn’t expect, like the comics.  He encouraged people to look at serious art in a fun and often humorous way, and was the first artist to successfully put a cartoon-like image in a museum.  Lichtenstein’s trademark was the use of “Benday” dots, named after inventor Benjamin Day. If you look closely at his images, you will see that they are made up of tiny dots. The children had the opportunity to create their own Benday dot images today, and took home a card by an artist who was inspired by Lichtenstein.  The kids had a great time.  Perhaps now you might take then to the Art Institute some day to see a Lichtenstein in person.

Parents/Guardians-

As cold/flu season is officially here we are sending out a reminder regarding our Medication Policy.  These policies include, but are not limited to, cough drops, throat lozenges and Tylenol.  Please read and if you have any questions, contact Nurse Dana at 224-765-3509.

The District's medication procedures are as follows:

1) A School Medication Authorization Form completed and signed by the parent/guardian and doctor must be on file at school to permit the child to receive all medication, including those available over the counter, during school hours.  All appropriate forms are available from the nurse or on the District website.  Please do not give your child any medicines (including cough drops, nose drops, aspirin, antibiotics, etc.) to keep on their person or in backpacks or in lunch bags.  This is for the safety of your child as well as other students.

2) Over-the-counter medicine must be brought to the school in the ORIGINAL package labeled with the student’s name.

3) All prescription medication must be furnished by the parent in a LABELED pharmacy container which displays the following: child’s name, date, prescription number, medication name, dose, and administration directions, as well as the physician’s name, and pharmacy address and phone number.

4) All medication should be brought to school by the parent or guardian. Students should not have medication, including cough drops, in their possession.

5) The consumption of medication will be supervised by the school nurse.  When it is not possible for the school nurse to dispense medications or to supervise the self- administration of medication by the student, an administrator will supervise or dispense.

6) NSSD 112 reserves the right to reject any request for administration of medicine in the schools and to contact the student’s physician to request an opinion regarding the child’s current health status before administering any medication.

7) For students with severe allergies and/or asthma, in conjunction with the physician and the parent/guardian, circumstances should be identified in which the student may self-administer and/or carry the medication.  A student will be permitted to carry and/or self-administer medication for asthma and/or an epinephrine auto-injector.

8) All School Medication Authorization forms expire at the end of each school year.  New orders must be provided at the beginning of each school year.

Medication Authorization forms can be found on the district website under the Health section.

For the month of December second graders will be exploring the customs and traditions of five different winter holidays celebrated around the world; Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Three Kings' Day, and the Chinese New Year. We will be diving into fiction and nonfiction texts to examine how different stories and traditions from different cultures can convey similar messages and the spirit of the season. We hope to cultivate a community in which the students learn to appreciate differences.
