All North Shore School District 112 2nd grade students will participate in the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) between March 13-27th. The CogAt is a district-wide universal assessment that measures reasoning and problem-solving skills in three different areas: verbal, quantitative and nonverbal. The Verbal Battery measures a student's vocabulary as well as his/her comprehension of ideas, efficiency and verbal memory, and ability to discover word relationships. The Quantitative Battery measures the student's quantitative reasoning and problem solving ability and provides an appraisal of the student's general level of abstract reasoning. The Nonverbal Battery measures a student’s reasoning skills based on geometric figures and shapes. The CogAT is intentionally designed for all primary age students and is appropriate for all learners (EL, Special Education, etc.) The test is untimed, and each question is read aloud by the classroom teacher. Students in the Dual Language program will take the assessment in the language in which they feel most comfortable. North Shore School District 112 strives to maintain a balanced assessment system. The CogAT assessment offers unique information about a student’s learning profile and contributes to a well-rounded data picture for each student. Score reports will be sent home in late spring.  Please visit our new NSSD112 website for more information about our District’s assessment practices.

Winter Happenings

I hope you have enjoying seeing some of the work we have been doing in 2B on Twitter and SeeSaw. It is such a wonderful time of year: the routines are in place, students know the expecations, and we are reading, writing, exploring math and different winter holiday traditions. I have been out for professional development a bit more than I like this month, but the lessons have gone smoothly with the "guest teachers." We have added some holiday crafts in this week and are getting ready to say goodbye to Aven and Mark, who are moving to different schools after winter break. We have a fun couple days before break planned.
If I don't see you or talk to you, I wish you a joyous winter break and happy holidays! I can't wait for all the fun learning we have in store in 2017!

A brief reading commerical: Please make sure that your child reads over winter break! Better yet, read together!  Please let me know if you'd like them to bring home some books from my library!

Winter Holiday Traditions

For the month of December second graders will be sharing the winter holidays they celebrate as well as exploring the customs and traditions of five different winter holidays celebrated around the world; Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, Three Kings' Day, and the Chinese New Year. We will be diving into fiction and nonfiction texts to examine how different stories and traditions from different cultures can convey similar messages and the spirit of the season. We will also be doing informational writing to share what we learn about each holiday. Our goal is to cultivate a community in which the students learn to appreciate cultural differences as well as recognize the common ideas of love, family, thankfulness, and giving that can be found around the world at this time of year.

Make Time for Reading!

Dear Parents,
The most important homework I ask my 2nd graders to do is to READ at home.  I have begun sending a book home with each child for "Camp Read A-Lot"- our take-home reading system. Your child will bring a book home that they either read in a group lesson, or picked as a "Just-Right" book from his/her seat sack. In addition to Mrs. Grost's library, I encourage you to utilize the Highland Park public library, as well as Scholastic book orders. If you do not have books at home for your child to read, please let me know and I will send more home.

It is crucial that you carve out time for your child to read. Encourage him to read to you while you're making dinner, have him read before bed, or have him listen to RAZ kids. Pick a book that YOU enjoy to read aloud to them- keep it fun! But make the time. They need to practice often- in school and at home.

So as you prepare for our Thanksgiving break, plan a trip to the library if you're in town, or pack books if you are traveling!
Happy Reading!

The class has earned 25 Legos and our party is scheduled for Wednesday 11/2/16. They voted for a movie party with pajamas! Since we are only celebrating for 30 minutes, we will do a portion of a movie or a show. Students can wear Pajamas all day, and bring a SMALL  stuffed animal that can fit in their backpack until the party.

If you have any questions, let me know!
