Happy Friday! Dojo Points & More

It's been great to have a full week of school and get back into the swing of things. Something new we started last week was Table DoJo Points. Throughout the day, I award points (or take away points) for expected behavior (or unexpected behavior). The kids love seeing their points at the end of the day- it helps remind them that EVERYTHING IS AWESOME when they work as a TEAM! At the end of the week, the table with the most Dojo Points gets a table reward for the next week.

Math

We are working on Standard NB.5-NB.7, using base ten blocks to add 2-digit numbers. By using the base ten blocks and drawings, students can show how the add the ones and tens together to get the sum of 2 or more 2-digit numbers. This makes the idea of "re-grouping" or "carrying" concrete and visual.

Visualizing

Our reading strategy focus has been on visualizing. We read Tar Beach without seeing the cover or pictures and drew pictures. Then we read it with the picture and finally watched the Reading Rainbow episode about Tar Beach. The portion about the George Washington Bridge was fascinating. You can watch it again here

Matter is Popping!

We took a closer look at the state of matter that is most difficult to observe: GAS. We did an experiment with Pop Rocks and Soda. Let's just say - we had a BLAST! We followed the experiment by writing lab reports, stating our scientific question, hypothesis, steps, results and conclusions.

What a great week the class had! Ryan's presentation was amazing! Now I understand why she wants to go there so badly! Thanks for the recap!
