Roy Lichtenstein INDIAN TRAIL SCHOOL FINE ARTS Dear Parents, Today, I visited your child’s classroom as part of the PTO’s continuing Fine Arts Education program. I presented the artist Roy Lichtenstein (19231997). Roy Lichtenstein was a painter, a sculptor and a printmaker who is best known for creating a whole new style of art called “Pop Art.” He believed that art existed everywhere in the world, even in places you wouldn’t expect, like the comics or the Yellow Pages. He encouraged people to look at serious art in a fun and often humorous way, and was the first artist to successfully put a cartoonlike image in a museum. Lichtenstein’s trademark was the use of “Benday” dots, named after inventor Benjamin Day. If you look closely at his images, you will see that they are made up of tiny dots. The children had the opportunity to create their own Benday dot images today. Ask your child where in Highland Park you can see Lichtensteinesque works! Fine Arts Committee Member Alyse Gamson We kicked off our new Science today with a "Balloon Poke." We Passed around 3 different balloons, poked them, and wrote our scientific observations. We then shared our observations, noticing how the balloon responded to our poke. We learned that each balloon was either filled with a SOLID, LIQUID, and GAS- the 3 States of Matter. Ask your child what happened when I poked each balloon with a thumb tack! We had a blast learning about matter!
What a joyous day we had yesterday! I feel blessed that I get to spend my days with all these wonderful kids and all their excitement. We truly felt the holiday spirit during our Secret Santa gift exchange. Kids were so excited to watch their recipient open his/her gift, they were hugging each other, thanking each other. Then I had them close their eyes as I passed out my gift to them. When I had them open their eyes, the collective cheer of delight warmed my heart! I wish I had video taped it! You're children are all very special to me and I hope you enjoy your time with them over break! Wishing you a happy and healthy new year.
(Stay tuned over break, Bullet loves singing Christmas Carols...) Dear Families, We have just finished reading Horrible Harry and the Holidaze. We have learned about five different winter holidays celebrated around the world and the traditions that go along with each. We found many common themes that link all of them, such as celebrating with friends and family, special foods, activities, and gift giving. To honor this gift giving season we have decided to do a Secret Santa Gift Exchange on FRIDAY. However, instead of going out and buying something new, we are going to give gifts we already have, "White Elephant" gifts. I have told them that they may give anything that is used but is still good. Such as a puzzle with all the pieces or a toy that isn't broken but that isn't played with anymore, a book that they have already read is another great idea! Please help your child find and wrap their gift (wrap with whatever you can find at home too!) Make sure to write who the gift is FOR on the outside but do NOT write who it is FROM. We are going to be making guesses! First we took notes in our Landform books Then we made islands with landforms. (Thanks to Mrs. Moyer and Mrs. Zechman for making the dough!) Next we painted. Finally, we made a map of our islands!
Physics is Fun!Thank you to the PTO for bring "Physics is Fun" assembly to IT. The kids loved getting their hands on different uses of energy in the afternoon workshop. Super Six Showdown!Today we played our new game with 2R. The game challenges the players to build 6 numbers at once- trying to make as many number that are greater number than their opponent's numbers. Then they record the comparisons in their notebook.
