Each week we study new vocabulary from one of our read-aloud books. Here's our weekly routine of activities:
Read Aloud- students listen for INTERESTING or IMPORTANT words and jot them down. They share with me, and I select 8 words.
Discuss & Define- I reread the sentence with the word, they use the context to discuss what they think the word means, then I look up the definition on Learner's Dictionary to see if their prediction was right. We use these definitions to compose our vocab sheet.
Illustrations- the kids draw pictures to go with the definitions. This allows them to make a visual connection to each word.

Skits- The highlight of our week is when the kids partner up and act out a skit using a vocab word. The class has to guess the word (and WHY they think it's that word). Sentences- If we have time in the week, we write original sentences for each vocab word. This will eventually be an independent homework assignment. |
