Dr. Grable visited us and treated our class by reading The Book With No Pictures.  Because I had already read it to them, they thought it would be fun to make our new principal say silly things!

Literacy

We have been working hard to build our stamina during Read to Self.

We review these posters every day to make sure that students can be INDEPENDENT during Read to Self time. This is the most important activity we do during Daily 5.

Math Rotations

We have begun the year with a review of basic addition facts. I am getting to know each of them as math thinkers and encouraging them to articulate their thinking and share the strategies they use when solving all sorts of addition problems. In second grade the students move through a rotation of four different activities:

Group Lesson: Students will meet with me in small groups for direct instruction based on the math standard we are learning.

New Game: Each week students play a new game in their groups based on our current math standard. Our games also foster a strong foundation of number sense, cooperation, and turn-taking.

Skill Review: Students will be working on review pages or on our classroom set of iPads on skills that we have covered but need continued practice with.

Fast Facts: It is a second grade expectation that students can accurately and fluently add and subtract all basic facts. Those that are ready might move on to multiplication during the year!

The students will get to do each activity twice a week. We also do whole class activities and build our math notebooks with a "Problem of the Day" and math vocabulary.

We also compiled all of our ideas about what a good student is.
